I’m cheating here – this didn’t happen this summer (we didn’t actually have a summer in London just an overall lukewarm sensation for a couple of months) but it did happen. One (proper) summer we were out in the garden and this little butterfly landed on all of us a number of times. It was beautiful.

But now the cold snap has arrived, the leaves are turning brown and winter is surely coming. Despite the extra time it now takes to get ready in the mornings (gloves, scarves, hats, coats – it’s exhausting) there are still some things I love about winter.

1. Stews, casseroles and one-pot wonders. Perfect for the working mother – just bung all the ingredients into a big pot, stir it a couple of times during the cooking process and there you have…a delicious dinner. Also an excuse to break out all the warming spices I love so much.

2. Electric blankets. Not just for grannies, these are amazing, but be careful with the settings – just right and you’ll feel like you are sleeping in a warm bath all night, too hot and you’ll wake up in the middle of the night feeling like you’ve spontaneously combusted.

3. Fires. Mmmm lovely crackling log fire, slowly simmering coal fire, doesn’t matter which one – they both radiate a gorgeous warmth and are great to stare into mesmerised by the golden glow, pretending you’re deep in philosophical thought, when you’re really considering which Delia or Lorraine Pascale recipe you are going to try next.

4. Frosty weekend mornings. Is there anything better than looking out the window on a frosty morning, knowing you don’t have to go out? You can put the heating back on for an extra treat and snuggle back into bed.

Winter suddenly doesn’t seem so bad.
